Chapter

Twenty-Nine

I hit my head hard on the way down. My vision blacked, but my hearing was still working. I’d read once that it was the last sense to go on the slippery slope toward unconsciousness.

“Close it! It’s a fireproof door, we should be safe down here!”

“There’s something in the way, I can’t get it shut!”

“Hold on, I’m coming!”

“It’s a piece of wood; it’s jamming the door!”

“Saints, that’s hot!”

The words came from high above, and right beside me.

“Slam it, Roan, for the love of Samhain, or we all burn!”

“Just one more… There! Got it!”

“It’s closed!”

“They said it’s closed, Aldytha.”

“I got that, thank you, Eunoia.”

“Can they get in?”

“No, not without the code.”

“What if they have the code?”

“They don’t. There’s no way she would have given it to any of them.”

“But what if –”

“If they had the code, they’d also have to brave that inferno, Fallon. How many vampires do you know who would willingly walk into a fire? That blaze is going to bring the entire house down, right over our heads. If you want to worry about something, worry about that.”

“What about the fire? Will it spread to this level?”

“No. But the ceiling might cave in. It depends how thick that rock is. It wouldn’t hurt to cast a few shield spells. Fallon, would you mind?”

I heard the song of spell-slinging, muttered Latin words running into one another, and felt the flutter of power nearby.

Then gentle hands were on mine. “Just lie still, witchling. Don’t try to move.”

A groan – masculine, grating. I turned my head to see Caleb Harding lying faceup beside me. I’d taken the brunt of the fall, but he was hurt, too.

“I think you broke my nose, you bitch.” He clutched the damaged appendage.

And then my grandmother was there, towering over him. Caleb dropped his hand and glared at her – the embodiment of all his hatred, the woman who had murdered his brother.

“You must be Mr. Harding,” Aldytha cooed sweetly. “I believe you’ve been looking for me?” And with that, she pulled back her arm and punched Caleb right in his broken nose.

“You’re the GOAT, Grandma,” I managed to say.

Her eyes flickered to mine, filled with fear and panic.

An ominous rumble overhead.

“I don’t know if it’s going to hold, Aldytha!”

“Protendo!” She fired the spell right at me, at point-blank range. “Sleep, Grayer,” she murmured, while the sounds of World War III exploded around us. And then, mercifully, everything finally fell silent.
